International Marriage?

March 11th, 2010
Rey asked:

I am an 18 year old female from the US and my boyfriend lives in the UK. Hes about to turn 20. We were wondering if it is legal for me to get married over there without applying for a prospective marriage visa first. For example, I go next month, and we get a legal marriagie. Is that possible? Also, if its not possible, what are some ways we could do this.? Please take our ages into consideration. as much information as possible would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
also, would there be any extra charge to the marriage procedures because i’m not from the UK if I get married to him over there?

I can’t say for the UK. In the US, it’s possible and legal. I don’t think that it’s a problem there, either, so long as you both can provide proper ID. That being said, you will NOT have anything but a tourist visa. You will have to obey the letter of the law while you are applying for a change in visa status.

Also, my wife is not from the US, and I am. If we had married at your age, we would NOT still be together.

Your old enough to get married. You can go over there without a visa and get married, he cant go to the states with u though! He will have to apply for a visa. And same for u, but its much easier to get a visa for UK than for the US!

What you will need is your birth certificate and ur passport, ID or drivers license.

    Good luck :)

I married at 18. I’m still happily married and I’m now 24. We have two beautiful boys now and own a home.

DON”T GET MARRIED YET :-) Most people can’t handle the things my husband and I have had to do to get where we are. Not at that age. If I had to do it again I would have probably waited. Even though everything has worked out great.

The added problem of citizenship would suggest you DEFINITELY wait. Discuss where you two will living and then take steps to make that happen BEFORE you get engaged and then married. To be honest I would suggest you wait until your 21 to even think about moving to another country.
